Daycare Closed After Death Of Child

By Caitlin Haedicke

A Harrisburg daycare has closed its doors after the death of a child. The Lincoln County Sheriff's Department is investigating the death of an 8-month old baby boy, according to Lincoln County States Attorney Tom Wollman.  The daycare center is located on Cliff Avenue in Harrisburg.

The daycare is Snicklefritz, a relatively new daycare to Harrisburg. From what we've heard, it's a daycare many families in Harrisburg take their children to and it's a situation that has shocked parents.

When Dale Zomer was called to pick up his 11-month-old daughter Taya from daycare, he was surprised by what he found.

"I went there to pick her up and the police were at the door. I couldn't even go in and get my child. So I was very concerned about what was going on," said Dale Zomer, who's daughter is in daycare at Snicklefritz.

It all started around 2:30 PM when Lincoln County Sheriff's Department received a call for an unresponsive baby. Shortly after a Sanford helicopter and an ambulance arrived at the scene. Dozens of parents then began arriving to pick up their children, confused and concerned. The Lincoln County Sheriff's office had blocked the entire area off and continued their investigation until about 7:30 PM when we noticed a note on the door.

Snicklefritz has posted two notes on their door. The first one says they will be closed Tuesday and unsure of when they will open again. The second note, posted just before the last person left, says they will reopen on Wednesday and lists their take on what happened. They state "a child became unresponsive while sleeping and though staff did all they could, he passed away."

But for Dale, that's not enough to convince him to return, stating, "We'll get some answers before we proceed."

We aren't sure exactly what caused the death of this 8-month-old baby boy, despite the daycare's note. The Lincoln County Sheriff's office is still investigating and an autopsy is being preformed.

I am close friends of the family that lost their little boy... Thank you to all that are giving them the time and space to grieve in peace. Shame on those who are more interested in the MEDIA CIRCUS then the fact that a 10 month old baby boy will never smile, laugh or crawl again. A day after Mother's day this mom will never hold her little boy again. Our hearts are breaking for the family. May God grant them a messure of peace and privacy during this sad time.

The media can't even get the age of the baby right, and they should be more worried about getting basic facts straight than anything else, especially with a terrible thing like this. And the media shouldn't make it sound like its a murder scene. It is nobody's business except the daycare and the baby's family. His name should not be released. I can't even imagine what the mother and father feel, do you think they want a reporter asking them? Please pray for them and let them grieve in peace.

Media: Please back off for this families sake. Yesterday afternoon (the day after Mother's Day) a Mom found out that she had lost a baby, as she fell to the ground bawling and you look across the parking lot, news cameras pointed at her. Today (the day after the death of a baby) an empty day care, closed to mourn the loss of a baby, has a phone ringing because somebody in the media wants to know if the daycare is going out of business or why they're closed...

What does it matter the names? Let them have their privacy and proper grieving – my thoughts and prayers are with this family

It does not matter what the name of the child was, or who the parents were. Why would this be relevant information to ask for on this board? For Pete's sake...

My child goes there and has for a year. I trust and support the staff and have no doubt that they did everything they could to prevent this from happening. It sounds like SIDS, and if that's the case there is nothing they could have done to prevent this tragedy from occurring. I am praying for the family and the daycare providers, they all have our love and support!

Will KSFY (kelo, argus)make it a huge headline when SIDS is given as the reason for this loss? Probably not..it will be a one liner at the end of the broadcast. The media is making everyone jump to conclusions.

My son goes to Snicklefritz. Many of the facts written in your article are incorrect. Please verify things before you write them. This is a tragedy, my thoughts are with the family of the child and the caring staff at Snicklefritz. This is not a situation of abuse or neglect.

My child has attended Snicklefritz for 9 months and we love everyone there. It is so sad that this happened and my heart goes out to the family of the little boy, the workers at the daycare, and all the children affected by this tragedy. Our prayers are with you all!

Get the facts, Don't make asumptions or listen to speculation. The family of the little boy is in my prayers. "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God"

It seems like there are a lot of hints of a crime occuring. This could have been a case of SIDS a deadly problem that takes an innocent child from you at any time. Lets see what the facts are before any more negative publicity occurs.
