Officer Shooting Ruled Accidental

Aberdeen police officer shot in the leg while searching a house for drugs.

By Associated Press

State investigators say the shooting of an Aberdeen police officer during a drug raid last week was accidental.  Grant Schnabel suffered a leg wound.  South Dakota Attorney General Larry Long says Schnabel was shot with a single round from an assault rifle carried by fellow officer Tom Tarnowski.

According to a probe by the state Division of Criminal Investigation, the weapon was in automatic-fire mode, and two rounds were discharged.  One round struck the floor of the home where officers were serving a search warrant.  Schnabel is in stable condition at Avera St. Luke's Hospital, and Tarnowski is on paid administrative leave.

I think we are lucky to have the police force that we have. I think they do their best and have much more training than many other cities. We are all human and can make mistakes. How many accidental shootings have there been by citizens? This is the first one I have heard of by a police office in Aberdeen. A wish a speedy recovery for shooting officer.

These are suppose to be highly trained police officers and it sounds like they dont even know how to hold a gun without it discharging. I feel much safer with cops like that on the street.

I can't believe how these incidents are handled by the police! In Iraq, soldiers are charged with a Field Grade Article 15 for an accidental discharge if no one is hurt! Who is teaching these guys weapons control and discipline! I can't imagine a CQB situation when you have to worry as much about the weapon behind you as the potential weapons in front of you. If this guy isn't punished our system is definitely broken.

What took so long to say that he shot by another cop. Big deal.
