The South Dakota Highway Patrol has released it's final report on a car/bus crash near Madison on March 26th.
That crash killed the car driver, 24 year old Lance Parliament of Sioux Falls. It now appears we may never know why he crossed the center line and hit the bus.
Here's what we know about the crash itself: Lance Parliament's Pontiac Grand Am hit the left front wheel of the bus, causing the bus to lock up and lose all steering capabilities.
The momentum of the crash pushed the bus onto the incline of the ditch, forcing the bus to roll on its side. 60-year-old James Quick of Alcester was driving the bus. The driver of the car, Lance Parliament was killed in the collision.
The final report says all of the 55 people on the bus were taken to hospitals. Some were taken for observation, others were treated for injuries. According to the investigation, lab reports show neither Parliament nor Quick had alcohol or drugs in their system at the time of the crash. Crash data recorders were recovered from both vehicles involved. But both were old and provided little useable information. Cell phone records show neither driver was making or receiving a call at the time of the crash. The final report also indicates speed was not a factor in the collision between the car and bus.
The bus driver, James Quick had a valid license and a clean driving record. Lance Parliament did not. His license had been revoked for 2 reckless driving convictions within 12 months.
