A wrongful-death lawsuit connected to the fatal crash between former South Dakota Governor Bill Janklow and motorcyclist Randy Scott has been settled for $1 million. The case was set to go to trial this June. Janklow ran a stop sign near Trent hitting Scott in August of 2003.

The lawsuit filed by the Scott family involving Bill Janklow actually named the federal government as the defended. That's because early on in this litigation a prosecutor ruled that Janklow was on official business as South Dakota's lone member of the U.S. House of Representatives when the crash happened. The family had sued for $25 million.

Nearly 5 years after the crash, the mother of Randy Scott discussed the settlement Wednesday afternoon. Marcella Scott told KSFY, "now that it's over we can finally get a closure. So many people have been helpful and have given us the strength to go on."

In a statement to the Associated Press, Bill Janklow said he's glad the Scott family can find closure from the legal case. He says Scott never did anything wrong and died when he was young. The crash happened on August 16th, 2003 when the Harley Davidson Randy Scott was riding struck the back of a Cadillac Janklow drove through a stop sign.

Marcella Scott says she still hurts inside because of the loss of her son, Randy. "Finally we can move on with our life. I guess I had to lose my son. I'll never get over."

After the crash, Janklow was tried and convicted of Second Degree Manslaughter and served 100 days in jail.

Bill isn't the one "screwing" the state, the people sueing are, no amount of money can bring him back so why would they have to do it?
