South Dakota's Bee Champ

Changlin Ke of Brookings recently competed in three national competitions.

By Kent Erdahl

The National Spelling Bee is now history and South Dakota's lone contestant, 14-year-old Changlin Ke of Brookings, fell just short of the finals. But the event capped off a month of competition and studying that anyone could appreciate.

Changlin Ke not only prepared for the National Spelling Bee, he also participated in the National Geography Bee and the National Math Counts competition.

Ke swept all three state competitions this spring and he's got the hardware to prove it. Though he did not bring home any national titles, he's certainly looking at a bright future.

"I feel very accomplished," Ke says. "But I don't want to stop here yet."

Changlin says he plans to pursue a career that concentrates on math because he says it's his strongest subject.
