The National Weather Service is officially saying two tornados touched down in Minnehaha County during Thursday night's storms. One was south of Humboldt and didn't do any damage. The other hit near Baltic, damaging three different properties.
KSFY talked to a family who watched the twister move across their land. As the storm moved across this property it proved once again just how random a tornado can be. Take a look at this, one, two, there were a total of 5 trees on the property knocked down. But just 50 yards away this house didn't suffer any damage.
Terry Opp had always wanted to see a twister. And when the clouds started twisting and dipping southwest of his pasture land he was fascinated. "As we watched it, the thing kept getting bigger and bigger and then the funnel formed and it looked like it was going to continue on past to the west."
But as he watched from this open door, the funnel made a 90 degree turn and started heading for the house. "When it was about 50 yards west I started to see the debris being picked up. The tin and dirt."
That when Terry ran for cover and not a moment too soon. Friday, as he thinks about all the work that has to be done. The stable that needs to be fixed, the trees to clean up, and the tin to pull out of the trees, it's a little overwhelming.
Terry's also re-thinking that wish to see a tornado. "When it's coming at you, I wished I hadn't seen it."
Terry says one thing that surprised him about this storm is after it was over, how quickly it moved out and he was able to come out and see the damage that was done. He tells us one other thing that surprised him was how his horses seemed to know something wasn't right almost a minute before he or his wife knew the twister was headed for them.
