Report: $7-Per-Gallon Gas

As oil prices hit an all-time record Thursday, a new report predicts that by 2012, gas will jump to $7 a gallon for regular unleaded.

Iowan dad Jay Chance is one of many drivers disgusted with rising gas prices and now economists at CIBC World Markets are forecasting gas will get to $7 in just two years. That's a 75% and too much for Chance to handle.

"Pretty much sick to my stomach," said Chance and he's not the only one. It seems this forecast has people upset.

"Angry. It makes me angry," said Sioux Falls mom Belinda McGraw.

Howard Britton feels the same way. He said, "If it goes to seven a gallon I'll probably be walking."

David Polcari from Ellis, SD told KSFY, "That's horrible. Everything is going to go up as a result of the oil prices being that high and it's going to be tough on everybody."

Especially tough on those who will be forced to give up their car. According to the report, those that make less than $25,000 a year, simply won't be able to afford to drive if gas is at $7 a gallon. It suggests that by 2012, there will be around 10-million fewer cars on the road than there are today.

As for Jay Chance, he's in the trucking business, so he's hoping this forecast doesn't come to fruition. He said, "I don't know what we'll do. We'll just have to keep paying it because we have to go to work and back, but there won't be anymore trips."

Maybe we should invade another oil rich country like Iran or Saudi Arabia. I'm sure that would bring the price down.

South Dakota and the US should have followed the lead of Europe developing a mass transportation infrastructure instead of relying on airplanes. Cutting funding for Amtrak and national bus lines like Greyhound getting from one point to another is much more difficult. Even though gas is much higher in Europe but the impact of high oil prices is less due to a well developed mass transist system.

What about people in small towns who don't have transits? My town is about 20,000 ppl. and we have no transits available. What do we do? This has to come to an end. They need to figure out something quick b4 families end up losing their homes and cars.

The feds have stated several times over the last eight years that they'll have the majority of the public in their mass transit plans and now with high-priced gas they are doing it..

I live 25 miles from work. I can't imagine what $7 would do to my family. It is scary to think about.

Lets hope they figure something out soon! Personally, If I were hit with these gas prices. I would be in a world of hurt financially. My family doesn't bring in enough encome to pay this much for gas!

I think your report is non sense 5 dollars I can see but we already seeing countries and people doing what they can to conserve and you are seeing more higher mileage per gallon vehicles out there but with people that drive to waste gas this is great for the envirnment Maybe people will get sensible. History repeats itself same thing happened in the 70's.

That's outrageous!! If gas prices are going to be that high then the minimum wage better be about $15 an hour so that ordinary people can afford it. It's bad enough that the price of food is going up too. How can ordinary people afford to live? I'll tell you, they won't!! I'm a mother of 4 teenagers and it's hard to take care of them now. I'm barely scraping a living as it is. I make little over $7 an hour. This is getting ridiculous! We need to use the oil we have in our country.
