Father Cathal Gallagher can stay in the U.S. while Immigration officials review his case.

By Brian Allen

After being told he would be deported for being in the country illegally, Father Cathal Gallagher has a second chance tonight to stay in the United States.

Gallagher was told in May he had to leave the country.

This morning, a staff member with Senator Tim Johnson called Gallagher to tell him federal immigration officials are reviewing his case.

Gallagher is being told he can stay....for now.

After a decade in South Dakota, Father Cathal Gallagher found his impending deportation a tough pill to swallow, even for a man of the cloth. "What's God saying? I thought I had played a fair game with God up until now."

Gallagher didn't sleep well Monday night: a lot of tossing and turning at the thought of leaving an area he says feels like his true home.

Tuesday morning, about 10, he had resigned himself to his fate when he answered a phone call: on the other end, a staff member with Senator Tim Johnson and five words he didn't expect to hear. "Do not leave the country."

While not a complete reprieve, the reviewing of Father Gallagher's case sheds new light on the possibility he will be issued a green card and stay in the U-S as long as he likes. "All options are open, the only option that's not open is returning to Kingsbury County."

Sioux Falls' Catholic Diocese has replaced Gallagher for the DeSmet, Arlington and Iroquois parishes.

Gallagher has contacted Bishop Paul Swain and while he has not spoken with him directly has been told the diocese response is positive.

Still shell shocked by the changing events, Gallagher tells me he is humbled by those who fought to give him this second chance. "I've done nothing to earn what came today."

The next step for Father Gallagher: a meeting with immigration officials in Sioux Falls July 14th to review his case and discuss what comes next.

Some of these comments are obviously based on no knowledge of the situation. Father G., entered the country many years ago with appropriate paperwork. Unlike many others, he dutifully followed the process, with help from the diocese and its professional help. The situation he is now in is the product of a burdensome process and the glitches that inevitably come along with it. See www.helpfather.com if you actually want to understand and THEN comment, or try the newspaper/radio/tv reports

Just because he's a priest shouldnt give him a free pass into this country. Just like 'alter ego' said you should have to wait ur turn like all the other millions of people that want to come here.

Obvbiously, some people haven't been folowing this story. Fr. is a GREAT man. The Diocese has done LITTLE. He deserves better. My family is SO glad that he gets to stay in the U.S. but are saddened by the lack of help he received from the bishop and the diocese as a whole. They out to be ashamed. Pathetic, really.

Why in the world would he have to come here illegally. Most religious denominations transfer their Clergy around the world and assist in making certain that all travel and international papers are in order. Sounds to me like this guy had something to hide, and now, the ever present hand of god catholic church is doing what it does best and intervening in yet another SANCTUARY test. Americans will never win this ugly battle until our elected officials stop taking the "bribe."

Dr. Waffle, is this your diagnosis? Please don't make statements about facts you do not posses.

Dr. Waffle you are what is wrong with so many people. Here is a man you know nothing about and you make such false accusations while hiding behind possible false names. People like you should be taken to court for libel.

What a Fine example he is setting. Go home, then if you wish to live in America, apply, like everyone else. He should not get a pass.
