Sioux Falls Police Find Beating Suspect Thanks To AnonymousTip

By Robert Wilson

Sioux Falls Police say they have solved an Aggravated Assault from Wednesday morning thanks to an anonymous tip. It happened in the 700 block of North Duluth Avenue. And until late Thursday morning police didn't even know who the victim was.

Investigators now tell us the victim is a 29 year-old man who lives in Sioux Falls. He was attacked as he walked along the block early Wednesday morning. The blood-covered spot where police and emergency responders found the victim is still so gruesome we can't show you anything but a very wide shot. Police say the suspect, 23 year-old Merlyn Kyle Eaglehawk hit and possibly kicked the victim in the head until he was laying unconscious in a pool of blood when authorities found him.

Neighbors like Brian VanWagner Jr. say that doesn't sound like the Merlyn they know. "I hang out with him, he hangs out with roommates of mine, and he seems pretty harmless."

Investigators say it was a chance encounter that led to the attack. The victim was walking with a friend just before 5 o'clock Wednesday morning. Sam Clemens is the Sioux Falls Police Information Officer. "The suspect was in front of them and just though normal walking the victim and his friend caught up to the suspect. There was some conversation that started an argument and that escalated into the suspect assaulting the victim."

Neighbors say someone close to Eaglehawk told authorities where they could find the bloody clothes he wore during the attack. Police will only say it was an anonymous tip. And Thursday night the question is why it happened is on the minds of many. According to Brian, "people are just, I mean everybody at his family's house is talking about it. Nobody knows what lead up to it."

Eaglehawk appeared in court Thursday afternoon on one count of Aggravated Assault. He's in jail on a $50,000 bond.

In my opinion no matter what kind of words were exchanged no one deserves the kind of beating that young man had gotten. The person who did this is a danger to himself and others and should be locked up for a very long time. The person that he did this to at least deseves that much after the long road he is going to have to go through after an event such as this.
