Fatal Fireworks Explosion Update

A Brookings man died Sunday, after a "sparkler bomb" he made exploded on his porch.

By Robert Wilson

A Brookings man is dead after police say a makeshift bomb made out of sparkler fireworks exploded.   This morning, he was identified as 23-year-old Ryan Voeller.

Police say he was handling the device on his porch when it went off. Police describe it as a sparkler bomb, which consisted of an unknown number of sparklers tied together.

Two other people at the residence tell investigators the victim planned to take the device out of town and set it off, but it went off on the porch.
