Early Morning Car Fatality Near Rowena

Rescue personnel on the scene of a deadly crash east of Sioux Falls Monday morning.

By KSFY News

A 22-year-old man from Brandon is dead after a car crash early this morning east of Sioux Falls.  It happened about four miles east of Rowena, about a half-mile from the Minnesota border.

The call came in at around 4:15 this morning. Minnehaha County Sheriff's deputies say an SUV was headed east on 266th Street and rolled into the ditch.  Authorities say 22-year-old Jacob Robert Meeker of rural Brandon was pronounced dead at the scene.  Authorities say speed appears to be a factor in the crash.  It's unclear if alcohol was involved.

It has taken me over two weeks to be brave enough to read what others wrote concerning my brother. It is wonderful to see just how many people loved him. His death has left a gaping hole that will never be completely filled-we loved him very much. He was a caring son, a loving brother and a wonderful uncle. At a time when we are left feeling empty with disbelief, your words of sympathy are appreciated. As to "me": While my brother made mistakes, I can honestly say he lived well and was loved.

I have not talked to Jake in many years. He was in marching band with me and I always wondered how he carried that big tuba around when he was so skinny! He had a contagious smile and it breaks my heart to think that he's gone. You will always be remembered Jake, RIP.

Jake, you will never be forgotten. you have always been an upbeat & great person. My prayers go out to his family and all of us who were his friends. I saw him a few weeks ago and we hadn't talked in quite a while, it was great to catch up and he still had that great, heartwarming smile. He will be missed greatly.

Jake we will all miss you so much! I can see that beautiful smile of yours right now as I remember all the times that you made me laugh. No matter what you always made everyone feel welcome, I still remember the night I introduced you to scrambled eggs with fried bologna in them and how you thought they were the best thing EVER!You may not have even liked them but you sure made me feel good, you certainly had that special touch to make everyone feel like they were someone. Thanks Jake! I Love U!

It's extremely unfortunate to see tragic events like this. There is never an answer for why things like this happen. It's unfair. Please take into consideration that the roads and the weather were terrible around the time of the accident. He's not to blame. My thoughts and prayers are with Jake's family and friends. God bless.

It will be the little things that you will remember, the quiet moments, the smiles, the laughter. And although it may seem hard right now, it will be the memories of these little things that help to push away the pain and bring the smiles back again. Extending deepest sympathy For you in your loss. And hoping, too, That comfort and peace May come to you. Words, however kind, can't mend your heartache: but those who care and share your loss wish you peace.

Just got the news, and can not believe it. I was kidding around with Jake just this week end at true value. Jake was (is) a good kid, scout, friend. Still can't believe it! I will miss him, he always had a smile on his face. Life is short, too short sometimes. My heart goes out to mom and dad, I know you guys are hurting now. I know he's in heaven. Everybody will miss him. I don't know what to say, still can't believe he's gone, way too soon....

I am so sad when I heard this happened. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. To the person named "me" on the last comment... please keep your comments to yourself. At a time like this, that wasn't appropriate.

I don't know who you are "me", but what an ugly soul you must have to be so unkind to Jake's family and friends. They are the ones who will read your hurtful comment, not Jake. He's gone and now his family and friends must suffer through the loss regardless of why or how he was lost. A little compassion goes a long way toward improving society and healing broken hearts. My prayers are with Jake's mom Tami. I know how much she loved him and how proud of him she was and always will be.

Seriously I do not know what your deal is and frankly I don't care. But you need to grow up and quit trying to start fights online. Do you not have anything better to do w/ur time?? Instead of sitting here saying rude things about a young man who just died why don't you use some of the time you have to make negative remarks and put it into educating kids to not speed. Seriously if you think you are a better driver than educate ppl. how to be just like you!!!!!!

My heart aches knowing another young friend is gone. Prayers are with Jake's family and our kids. The Brandon community has supported so many losses and will do so again.

You have no heart. Accidents happen, whether he was speeding or not, it doesn't change who he was as a person. WE LOVE YOU JAKE AND MISS YOU SO MUCH. See you in heaven!

Wow...in reply to "me" It amazes me what people will say when they think no one knows who they are. Every single one of us has been guilty of speeding at some time, and this tragic accident could have been any one of us. Jake was a friend to many of us, someone's child, brother, or cousin and will be missed. I hope someday when something tragic happens in your life somebody with no heart comes along and throws it in your face. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with family and friends.
