Fire Investigators Say Lighting May Have Sparked Blaze

By Robert Wilson

An overnight blaze kept Sioux Falls Fire Fighters busy well into Thursday morning. It happened at just after midnight at 301 South Grange Avenue. Fire investigators say it started in the New Asian Food Market and then spread to First National Pawn located next door.

When fire fighters first arrived they tried to get in the door and fight the fire from inside, but they felt the heat and flames coming up from the basement, felt the floor starting to give way, so they had to back out and fight it from a defensive position."

The flames lit up the night sky as firefighters did what they could to stop them from spreading. Battalion Chief Jay Titus told KSFY, "you're not going to risk a lot when you can't save a lot, and you don't want to endanger anybody's lives when there was no other lives in danger."

The pawn shop next door is also a total loss. The shop's assistant manager, Josh Froseth watched it all after getting a phone call. "You got a fire at the shop. Come on down, and flames everywhere." By daylight he was videotaping the scene so the owner can see what's left. "The precious metals are a big concern for management. Other than that, most everything's a 100 percent loss."

Quang Danh, the owner of the New Asian Food Market tells KSFY everything was okay when he left at 10:30 and again when he drove past 11:45pm.

After hours of watching the scene, Josh says it was pretty clear early on there wasn't going to be much left. "And it was about an hour before the roof caved in, and it was down for the count."

Investigators tell KSFY they believe it might have been lightning that sparked the blaze. They can't confirm that because they still can't get inside right now. They hope to be able to confirm that in the next couple days.

I see on KELOLAND that their is ITEMS STOLE from this pawnshop it was game systems and computers. How and why were these stole if they were totally ruined??? This sounds kind of fishy. I was told my bow was ruined along w/ everything else. They also said my bow was in a fireproof case. so im just curious to know why and how items that were ruined were stole???

I lost many things in this shop. I am very irritated w/ this situation. I had a lot of valuables there that I will never get back. I can't even get the money to replace them.

I feel for this guy. I really do. However, what about the people who had items there? Just because they pawned them didn't mean they didn't mean anything to them. Times are tough and people are pawning stuff they love just to get by. When they pawn it they are told they can pick it up when they have the money. And now they can't even get it. How fair is that. This guy gets an insurance check. But won't insure the things he has of people's in there. This is just wrong if you ask me.

If that gold was worth so much and so priceless to your family why did you pawn it? I'm sure you had you had to sign it over to the store so you were giving it up in the first place. It's your own loss.

Sad to see the pawnshop go....was one of my favorites and as a little kid it used to be a sunshine store....feel really bad for the owners and the mess they now face...i sure wouldn't want to be in there shoes....i had my mothers wedding ring in there...so i feel really bad but glad no one was hurt or even killed.

I work at the pawnshop, and all we can tell customers right now is that we know very little. The jewelry was in a safe, and that has been recovered, but everything is gone. Our phone # is going to remain the same, and we urge customers to call in about 2 weeks when we have a new store up and running, and we will have more information for them at that time.

If the gold and bracelets ment so much to you then why in the heck did you take them to a pawn shop. Your probably one of those people who will use this fire to your advantage and sue for everything you can. Get a CLUE

I see where this man is coming from. I lost a 1200 dollar piece of equiptment and all of my rings. When you pawn something you are told you will get it back. Not have it burnt to the ground and not be insured. They should have to do something for their customers. Personally I feel bad for the business but at the same time I think it affects customers more than anyone.
