Community Mourns ATV Crash Victim

By Leslie Rupiper

A South Dakota community is mourning the loss of 7 year old Laurel Smith.  She died after the ATV she was driving was hit by a pick-up truck. Her 4 year old sister, Mia, and 2 year old brother, Rylen, were riding behind her on the same ATV. Both were hurt, but are expected to survive their injuries. Now the community of  Lake Norden is rallying around a family that's understandably, heart-broken.

Superintendent Joel Jorgenson remembers Laurel as, "Happy, just smiling, again a typical 1st Grader. Full of energy, nice young girl." This fall, Laurel would've been a 2nd Grader at Hamlin Education Center.  Jorgenson says, "Just a vibrant young lady. With any situation, she's going to be missed by her classmates, going to be missed by the students of the school and she'll be missed by the staff." The school's playground will stay empty for about another month until Laurel's classmates head back to school. The superintendent says that's when they'll decide how they'll address her death with the boys and girls in her class." Jorgenson says, "We'll assess the situation, sit down with the counselors, everybody involved and approach it in the correct matter when the time comes."

The crash that took Laurel's life happened just a few miles from her school and her church. Now those communities will likely be pillars of support for the smith family. Maydelle Boadwine says, "It's almost unbelievable." She's related to the children's grandmother. Maydelle says such a tragedy is tough for the entire community. She says, "This has nothing to do with where you belong or anything. This is a little girl that died and it's gonna be sad for the whole community."

Funeral arrangements for Laurel Smith have not yet been announced. Her sister, Mia, suffered a concussion and is expected to be released soon from the Watertown hospital. 2 year old Rylen was taken to Sanford Hospital with a broke leg, collar bone and facial fractures.

Parents should not let their children be on an atv unsupervised...The parents should have been with this little girl...Im not trying to be mean but, the parents could have prevented this tragic accident from happening if they would have been with this little girl...So its the parents fault really, so don't blame the truck driver for the little girl pulling out in front of him...Parents should have all powered vehichles put in a safe place so children dont get into them and kill themselves...

Who are we to judge? Do we even know the full story? What if there was a babysitter there. No one said the parents were even with the children. I have a seven year old. Kids are naughty...they could have been outside playing and went against their parents rules. Everyone has a right to his or her own opinion, however I think KSFY needs to read these before they post them in consideration of the family. The family now has to live with a pain greater than most of us will ever have to know.

I let my 7yr old ride thru so i can open the fence but that is it. I would never let her drive especially with her sisters on the back and we do live by a highway. I feel bad for the little girl and her brother and sister but that is just bad decision making. my prayers are with them but parents please be more careful with your childrens lives. We need to remember that they aren't adults and need the guidance from the adults.

how is it ok for a 7 year old to drive a 4 and a 2 year old around on an atv, farm kid or not? a 2 year old is too young and mischievous to be off on his own... or even worse, in the supervision of a 4 and 7 year old. It's the parents job, not the other kids. So they need to stand up and take responsibility for not watching over their children. No what-if's... it's the parents fault for not taking better care of the children and i agree that they should be charged in court and the kids taken

Our prayers are with the families involved in this accident. It is so sad to read the blogs from people so quick to pass judgement. Again our prayers are with both of the families involved.

I am from South Dakota and can't believe every farm family lets their young children ride adult toys. Doesn't seem real smart to me. This is so sad please leave both familes alone. Just pray for them and all the farm families that let their young children ride on vehicles made for adults.

SD Raised, i cant believe that you're justifing 3 kids being on a 4 wheeler! & saying that every sd farm kid drives by the age of 5,are you out of your freakin' mind!? its terrible that she died, but she had no business being on that atv. I have two 7 yr olds in my house that we dont let ride their bikes on our street w/out supervision and you are defending parents who left a vehicle intended for adults, available for a 7yr old to drive. also they live by a hiway, thats asking for trouble.

We all make mistakes, and if the parents would of known, they would of NEVER let the kids do this. You have to believe this is all God's plan, and we are not to blame anyone. We need to pray for the families and quit this. They are good people...I know.

We all know how terrible the parents must feel. I put myself in their shoes or think of what if it were my 7 year old niece who was the one killed. It makes me sick to my stomach thinking of what they are going through. I also understand peoples anger toward the parents..even though I have extreme sympathy for them. It is just not fair to this little girl who lost her life because the people who should have been protecting her from harm, did not do so. I pray for Laurel, her family n the teen.

Let's just pray for the families involved. We can beat each other over the "what ifs" and "they should have been watching" the fact is a precious little girl died. Let's just pray for the families.

I have a question for those of you defending the act of letting such young kids use an ATV. Would you also let them take your car or pickup to drive? The parents of the 3 children on the ATV need to be held accountable for letting something like this happen, they would be if the kids had taken the family car and caused this accident.

I would be careful passing judgement so quickly. No one ever knows what "could" happen. I feel that what you put in the world will come back to you "twice" more. So be careful!! Come on!

The only reason I brought up the boy was to take some of the horrible gossip off of that poor family. Worked didn't it. Leave them all alone, the whole thing is a tragedy, none of us ever want to experience! Tell me how horrible you would feel if it were your child, you don't have to judge them they are already judging themselves as any parent would do. So, I meant no ill will toward the boy, your right it wasnt his fault, but please leave this poor family alone. Voice ur opinions to yourself

I pray for the families of Laurel and the driver. This is a horrible ACCIDENT! Leave these families along to their grief. I am a Mom of 3 boys and you can set rules on anything but a children do not make smart choices. Do you know the family? Do you know what rules the kids had? Do you know that they were told they could go for a ride to the street? Do you know if they were allowed to ride together without supervision? I don't know the facts so I am not going to pass judgement; how can you?

Maybe those children should not have been riding unsupervised, but who are we to judge their parents. It was a horrible accident and a lot of people are suffering. This is something that they will all live with for the rest of their lives. God always has a plan two of those children lived so it was not their time but it was that little girls and no one is to blame. She could have died any number of ways. God has a plan for her, have faith in that.

SD Raised, you are SO WRONG. The horses were close to the road. The driver of the pickup was not in the wrong at all. The kids shouldn't have been on the road. Stop pointing fingers because you have no idea what you are talking about.

How do you know he wasn't paying attentin? Were you in the car w/ him or nearby? Before you sit here and talk about him maybe you should think first. No charges were pressed against him. Therefore he more than likely wasn't responsible. Even though he wasn't he has to live w/ this for the rest of his life. Give him a break...how would you feel if he were your son or even you.

I grew up on a farm in SD with 4-wheelers and lots of other pieces of equipment...that I didn't drive until I was 12 because my dad was very safety conscious. I am now a mother of two still living on a farm and we have a four-wheeler. My children will not be driving it until they are at least 12 which still may be too young. Those vehicles are not toys. They can go 50 mph and are very difficult for short, little arms to steer and maneuver. SD or not...

Parents letting more than one child on a vehicle made for only one person, no protective safety equipment? And some say not to judge. It is hard not too. May Laurel RIP, may the young drive heal from this terrible tragedy and may we all learn from these parent's very poor judgement.

The 3 kids did nothing wrong, they were hit by a driver not paying attention....get over it people and let the family mourn!!! This is SD and it was a farm! i knew how to drive a four wheeler by the time i was 5. My heart goes out to all involved!!!

Thursday, Jul 24 at 8:02 AM Anonymous wrote ...

Where are you all from? Obviously not SD. Every farm kid I know learned to drive when they were 5. This was an accident. How about having some compassion for a family who lost someone they loved? Stop judging people you don't even know!

Thursday, Jul 24 at 7:37 AM Anonymous wrote ...

It's amazing how quick some of you are quick to judge without knowing the whole story. The family is going through a lot right now. Instead of posting such negative opinions, you should be praying for them and asking God to give them strength to get through this tragedy.

Thursday, Jul 24 at 7:37 AM wow wrote ...

you people have no idea what you are even talking about, you act like these parents put the kids on the atv and said hey I think we will let them get hit by a 15 yr old kid that was paying attention to the horses instead of the road. These kids live on a farm, how many farm kids do you know that don't know how to drive an atv or even a car. Obviously you people didn't grow up in SD!

Is 7 too young to be giving rides on an ATV? Yes. Should these kids been near the highway? No. Should people be posting rude comments saying that the kid's parents should go to prison for child abuse and manslaughter? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Leave these poor people alone. They are more than likely beating themselves up enough without rudeness from the public. It was an unfortunate ACCIDENT and it could happen to ANYONE! Unless you were there when it happened, quit speculating and pray for the involved!

Let's just get some common sense here!!!! How did that even come close to being a good idea? How mature are the parents anyway? Should they even be trusted with the children they have living yet? You gotta know this definately isn't the first time they rode that thing. What else have they been letting them do?
