Drunk Driving Crash On 41st & I-29 Overpass

By Leslie Rupiper

Just before 1 a.m. Saturday morning, Sioux Falls police were called to a crash involving several vehicles near 41st Street and the I-29 overpass. Police say a 1996 Dodge Caravan driven by 51 year old Rikey Krebs was headed west on West 41st Street, approaching the I-29 overpass, when the van hit a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am that was stopped at a red light for westbound traffic.

After the initial impact, the Grand Am was pushed across the intersection and hit a 1991 Subaru Legacy that was stoppped facing eastbound in the turning lane for Northbound I-29.  The Subaru Legacy then hit a 1997 Dodge Ram that was stopped in the eastbound inside lane of West 41st Street at a red light.  As the Dodge Caravan continued westbound, after the crash, it side-swiped a 2007 Ford 500 that was headed west on West 41st Street on the overpass.

Krebs and the driver of the Pontiac Grand Am were both taken to Sanford Health with non-life threatening injuries.  Krebs was arrested for DWI, No Proof of Insurance and No Seat Belt.

Just last night the news reported our prison's have more room than ever! If you wanna drink and drive and put my life at risk shy shouldnt he face jail time? People out of prison are not running around putting our lives in danger?

Even a first offense deserves a more severe consequence. This need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent maybe civil suits are necessary. We should all feel safe on our streets - we shouldn't need to worry if our family and friends are safe from drunk drivers as they travel our roads.

Of course he deserves prison time maybe he will think twice before getting behind the wheel of a car after drinking. It could be our children he hits next time and the outcome could be different. People need to start paying the price to many are just getting a slap on the hands and a fine and learn absolutely nothing at all.

Yes their are bigger problems. however, this is a HUGE ONE! He could have killed many people. He deserves to be put in prison or in a rehabilitation center. With him on the streets people aren't safe!

Prison is what krebs deserves. Any punishment less that that is unthinkable. Next time he may kill someone.
