Two Killed in Highway 212 Accident

By KSFY News

Two people were killed in a head-on collision between a semi truck and a passenger vehicle yesterday afternoon on Highway 212 in Deuel County.  The accident happened just after 2pm.

According to the Highway Patrol,  86-year-old Lonnie Johnson and 80-year-old Marilyn J. Broz of Pine City, Minnesota, were killed in the crash.   Another passenger in the vehicle, 84-year-old Shirley Johnson received non-life threatening injuries.

Troopers say the vehicle driven by Lonnie Johnson was traveling west on Highway 212 when it drifted into the oncoming lane and into the path of a semi truck.  The driver of the semi attempted to avoid the crash by driving into the south ditch.  The car collided with the rear portion of the trailer, which caused the semi to overturn onto its side.   Broz was pronounced dead at the scene.  Lonnie Johnson was transported to a Watertown hospital but later died of his injuries.  The driver of the semi  was also transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Adrian/Harrison How would you like seeing your grandma with a neck brace from two cracks in her neck and several broken rips. She must now use a walker to just use the restroom. She’s lost her sister and husband of over 50yrs. Her whole life has changed in just a few min. These are the people you so rudely compare to terrorism. Perhaps if you had had such wonderful grandparents your would have understood They need to be valued. We are all only here for a short time.

These comments are rude!! Instead of pointing the finger and blaming - we should be praying! Praying for comfort, for the families involved. Accidents happen if there are teens involved we try to place blame 'cuz they are to young, if it's middle aged - drinking or speed. Sorry to the families involved and my thoughts and prayers are with you at such a difficult time.

OMG THIS IS WRONG

You don't prove your point by calling someone rude. If you think seniors should be driving when they clearly are not with it, be my guest and prove it. My thoughts and 'prayers' are with the victims.

I cant believe how insensitive people are.I was blessed to have all four grandparents until I was 32 years old. Not very many can say that. They all drove until into their 80's. My surviving grandpa is 85 years old and still drives and does field work. I would ride with him ANYTIME! Have you been driving around Sioux Falls and paid attention to what teens do behind the wheel? Or people in a hurry to get to work? I would take meeting my grandpa on the road anyday over that! You are ignorant!

To Adrian: You are the rudest person ever! I wonder how many people would care if you were killed on that road? Obviously you have no regard for human life. Hopefully you are not a spouse or parent, because sounds like you would be a lousy one. My sympathy go out to the ones affected by by this horrible tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. listen here you so called negative people my father is 80yrs old and is still farming and he is one of the best drivers and safest drivers i know. The ones making the terrible comments are upset because they are the ones who probably have caused many accidents in their time. Think about the families and the suffering they are doing. Quit thinking about yourself and your just scared because they might make you take a test again. For being so negligent about others feelings your that way on thehwy

Though it may seem like it, I don't think these people are saying this example specifically is one of an unsafe elderly driver. I hope they were trying to make the point that elderly drivers in general are a huge concern of mine EVERY time I get behind the wheel. I'm sure this man never presented any signs of being unfit to drive, otherwise the family would have intervened. The family is I'm sure still grieving and negative comments, and those meant to prove a point should be kept off this story

Friday, Aug 29 at 11:43 AM Harrison wrote ...

I have deep sympathy for your relatives who were involved in this accident. However, this is an opinion post board. Expect a variety of posts. I personally believe that elderly people are dangerous behind the wheel and a menace to our society in general, on the same level as terrorism.

TOO young, TOO old...what difference does it make? WE ALL NEED TO BE CAREFUL! We all know that we take that chance of getting into an accident when we drive. come one people, grow up! This family just lost their grandfather. have a heart and stop with the negative remarks. what if this was your grandfather, father, or child. What if he had hit a deer? what does age have to do with it? I'm 28 and have hit deer at times. tell me, does my age matter? was I too young or too old to drive?

My thoughts and prayers go out to your family. It is hard to lose a loved one. Th rude comments on here should not be posted. It is not only elderly that cause accidents, how many teen accidents are there. Let the family grieve and leave the bad comments to yourself.

I agree... for all you people know these older folks could have been 30x the driver you are.. yet you feel the need to be so disrespectful. Must be nice to be so perfect that you can't spend any time looking at the bad things about yourself... to only have time to do so upon other people.

I'm Lonnie's granddaughter. I don't think negative and rude comments should be allowed to be posted regarding his death. I understand concern about elderly people driving but this isn't the place to make rude comments. We are in grieving so be respectful. We lost two members of our family. My grandmother's still recovering in ICU. She searches the web and I don't want her to see these rude comments. Have a heart.

My sympathies to the familes. Older drivers??? Tough one to call he may of had health issues if they were there then probably shouldn't be driving. Again tough one to call but I do pray for the families hard to lose our loved ones to matter what their age. Drive careful applies to all ages!

Old people, slow and dangerous behind the wheel, represent a clear and present danger to our society.

Barry, I'm so sorry about adrians - aka anonymous' rude comments. he is very, very rude to EVERYBODY. I have ONE grandmother left and I cherrish her very much. she taught me how to be very respectful, helpful and kind to everybody. maybe that is what Adrian has missed in his life - GRANDPARENTS! infants, elderly, and children is who i cherrish the most. you and your family have my sympathy and prayers. it's horrible to even look at the picture.

The fact that readers are able to comment on stories like this is insensitive and inappropriate.

Thursday, Aug 28 at 9:02 PM Adrian wrote ...

Seniors should be required to retake drivers test yearly after turning 65. Thousands of lives would be saved if the law were changed. Seniors behind the wheel are a ticking time bomb ready to take us all out, just like terrorism.

Thursday, Aug 28 at 8:35 PM Julie wrote ...

We ALL need to worry about older members in our own families? It doesn't HELP anyone to blame--we ALL have our own issues to deal with-I don't think any accident is done intentionally-When is the last time you left YOUR parent drive-and he or she probably shouldn't have been?

Thursday, Aug 28 at 8:22 PM Barry wrote ...

This is my grandfather and I don't appreciate the rude comment about older folks. My Grandfather worked years on his farm and has always been a safe driver till this accident. We suspect that because of health reasons grandpa lost control of his car. I am 42 and had an accident myself a few months ago. It only took a few seconds to rearend someone. I would spend more time worring about people using there cell phones while driving than out seniors. Many Seniors have noone to drive them.

that is why old people should not be driving!!! TAKE THEIR CARS AWAY!!!

My sympathies to the families. I'm sure this will spark a huge debate, but when are they going to start requiring people over the age of, say 75, to take driver's tests (actual get in the car & drive tests!) in order to renew their licenses???

I've been on that road a thousand times. It's boring and there's nothing out there. If there was an accident it doesn't matter.
