Box of Ammunition Found On Sioux Falls School Grounds

By Robert Wilson

Wednesday a box containing .50 caliber ammunition somehow ended up on the grounds of Lowell Elementary in Sioux Falls after being delivered to a nearby house. A custodian found it and all the shells were accounted for well before students showed up so the school day went on as normal.

District officials tell KSFY they don't know exactly what kind of .50 caliber shells they were. The box was stolen from a house where it had been delivered.

Mother Deb Cline says she got a recorded call from the school about 2 o'clock. "It was scary to think that that kind of stuff can just be laying around. At least it was just ammunition. But it could have been a gun and what if the kids got their before the janitor saw it."

The Sioux Falls School District's Dr. Bill Smith says it's not clear if the box was labeled as ammunition. "My understanding it was dumped near the dumpster and there were a few shells they needed to look for."

All of this happened before 7:15 Wednesday morning. When they got home, Deb says her kids, Kaeman in 4th grade and Enoch in kindergarten, didn't know anything about it. She wishes school officials had told students what happened.

Most of all Deb says as well as the situation ended, it could have been much worse. "But what if it was an older kid and they had guns at their homes, you know you never know. It was scary for me."

Firearms experts tell KSFY these are not common shells. The shells themselves cost about 5 dollars each. And the guns that fire each of them are very expensive as well.

First of all we have no idea what kind of rounds these were. Many people hunt deer with 50 cal black powder rounds. Many bear hunters carry a large caliber side arm. This should not be looked at lightly but don't assume that because it is a large caliber round that it would destroy any game that is shot with it. If you don't hunt you don't know. A grizzly bear can take multiple shots to the head to take down. If it was shot with anything much smaller you might as well have brought a bb gun

Guns and ammunition by themselves are not to be feared, it's when you have someone who is uneducated on how to properly handle guns/ammo that you should start worrying. Every person should learn to respect a firearm when it's in their possession and know how to handle it, make sure it's unloaded, point it in a safe direction and lock it up! Guns/Ammo don't kill people on their own...it takes someone to pull that trigger and usually that somone has no respect for the power of a firearm or ammo.

It's a scary situation when shells are found on school grounds..but who really knows why they were there..could be any number of reasons. No need to get all crazy about ownership of guns/ammo. keep your guns & ammo locked up and make every child go through gun safety courses to learn how to properly handle a firearm and to learn to respect them. I learned that by the age of 5 when I first started shooting and my kids are learning it at an early age as well.

whats wrong with having big guns, or a hundred guns? I say the more guns the better. If you have little kids running around lock them up, and teach kids how to use them and what they are for.

Why dont compare the number of people that are killed each year by weapons? These could be sticks, cars, guns, rocks, to the number of people killed by bugerking, mcdonnalds. It seems to me that as long as they kill them slowly we dont see it as a threat. So eat up anti's they got a dollar menu.

by the way, there are several different guns that shoot .50 cal loads ranging from a pistol that fits in your pocket to a full sized machine gun. When you hear .50 cal DON'T automatically ASSUME they are from the machine gun.

I am suprised people posting here can shrug off finding bullets at school. Ever hit a shell with a rock? Or throw a shell into the air where there is pavement? I would rather be overconcerned, than underconcerned...

adrian- people don't hunt with .50 cal bullets!!! i hunt all the time and if you shot something with a .50 cal bullet you would not be able to eat it cause there wouldnt be much left! and besides there is almost no way an 8 yr. old could even shoot a .50 cal bullet! it would throw him so far back with the kick! i agree noone needs to have or own a .50 cal for ANYTHING!!!

You were the one that said they were over reacting, because you don't believe an eight year old would bring ammo to school. FYI I didn't cherry pick anything I did a report about this in college.

What do people need .50 cal ammo for anyway? Do you need to shoot at tanks, take out aircraft, or mabey even fight local law enforcement, overkill people, I don't belive guns should be banned, but people should at least be a bit concerned about neighbors with the tools to start a militia.

There is nothing that hasn't happened before. Quit cherry picking random events and presenting them as evidence to be scared in the future.

For your information the youngest child to kill another was in a Michigan school. Both of the children were six yrs old..the victim Kayla Rolland was shot in the neck and died.So guess what don't be so naive to the situation it happens all of the time. Thank God the school found them, it could have been a horrific ordeal.

Another classic example of over reacting. I'm sure some eight year old isn't coming in packing heat ready to blow away his teacher and classmates. It's obviously some stupid kid who found them in his Dad's hunting supplies and took them to school to show off.
