Sioux Falls Home Destroyed By Flames

By Robert Wilson

A fast moving fire destroyed a home at 4208 South Galway Thursday afternoon. Firefighters say 2 people made it out of that fire alive. The fire burned so hot and so intense it could been seen for miles as crews responded. One of the people inside told KSFY how he woke up to a wall of flames and didn't even have time to grab his shoes before he had to flee for his life.

The fire was reported shortly before 5:00. Firefighters say it looks like the fire started in a fire pit on the back deck and spread to the attic where it moved fast. Joshua Bertrand was asleep in the house when his roommate woke him up. "The next thing I know, he runs up the stairs says the decks on fire. Well, I wake up and look ahead of me and probably a 7 foot flame was shooting off of the big wrap around couch that's sitting on the deck."

Josh says all four people inside got out safely as glass was shattering all though the house. But his roommate hurt his ankles jumping off the deck.

The fire drew a crowed to this quiet neighborhood. 10 year-old Hana saw the smoke and wanted to get a closer look. "It was just like a huge black cotton ball. Like with a huge fire everywhere."

Josh says he isn't sure if the blaze started in the fire pit as investigators believe. He thought the last fire in there had been out for hours. "Last night but not today. And it rained this morning so it should have been wet enough you would think. But i don't know."

Now these guys aren't sure when they'll be able to get in the house or if there's even anything left to save. By early evening there was nothing to do but sit and stare at a home that's now in ashes. "Already shed enough tears. Not much you can do anymore."

Joshua told KSFY that as they were still sitting out there on the curb neighbors were bringing up bags of clothes and other items so they'll at least have something to wear in the next few days.
