A trial over how much money South Dakota schools should get, started today in Pierre. It focuses on the 6 school districts: Rapid City, Faith, Doland, Bon Homme, Willow Lake and Florence. The attorney representing parents and students says the state has an obligation to provide more funding. We asked local parents whether they think their kids are getting a good education in South Dakota.
Some believe when your kids attend public schools in South Dakota, those schools are so under-funded, that it actually violates your child's constitutional guarantees to public education. That's at the crux of the lawsuit being heard in Pierre. But not everyone agrees, including Denise Solheim. who's son is a Senior in the Redfield District. But she hears a different story from her daughter, who's a teacher near Mobridge. Denise says, "She's really been keeping a close eye on it as far as she feels that there are schools really in need of it."
But the State says this is an issue that's not all about money. Instead, they cite higher graduation rates, excellent attendance rates and outstanding test scores in the State." Shavetta Johnson's daughter goes to Horace Mann Elementary in Sioux Falls. We asked if she thought the school was getting the money it needs. Shavetta says, "I think they are. I think maybe they could do a little bit more, but right now they're okay with me."
Carol Reuer has two kids in the Hamlin School District. She says they're luck because the district is growing. But she understands how some might be in a different boat. Carol says, "You know, I think it is a valid point for some districts to need more, depending on where they're at in the state."
The trial is expected to last 5 to 6 weeks.
