Family Mourns Tragic Loss

By Melissa Stee

A triple murder in an apartment complex in Yankton yesterday has left family members of the three victims mourning the loss of their children.

Brian Sr. and Deb Vanwagner are dealing with the loss of their son, Brian.

His parents say Brian was the type of kid that everyone liked and he even had a knack for cars. They say he wouldn't think twice about stopping to help someone in need.

Brian Jr. was a son, a brother and an uncle to eleven nieces and nephews. His parents say those kids adored him and were excited whenever "Uncle Bubba" came to play. Now they must come to grips with losing someone that special.

Brian Vanwagner Sr. says, "I don't know. I never thought I'd have to bury one of my own kids."

He says his son and his fiance, Chassidy Bamsey had just moved to Yankton. They were visiting their friend, Robert Riibe when they were tragically killed.

Brian's parents say the three of them were getting out of the elevator at the apartment complex when the gunman fired, putting them at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Now his family is left sorting through pictures and trying to remember Brian for who he was instead of how he died. But for his mother, Deb Vanwagner that leaves plenty to be missed.

Deb Vanwagner says, "Him walking through the door and calling me after 10:00 at night. She called me at almost 11:00 and I thought picking up, expecting it to be him and it wasn't."

They say it's hard to make sense of it all. Instead they say they'll just have to work through their loss one day at a time, believing their son is now in a better place.

Brian Vanwagner Sr. says, "He's up there helping somebody for sure. Probably oiling the pearly gates or something up there."

The Vanwagner's tell KSFY, Brian's funeral is being handled through Miller Funeral Home. The funeral service is tentatively planned for next Monday.
