New Affordable Housing Options Soon to Open in Sioux Falls

By Robert Wilson

Owning a home has always been part of the American Dream. But affordable housing can be tough to find, especially right now. KSFY shows you one Sioux Falls housing development that may make the American Dream a reality for local families.

Nathan Gomez has never owned a home, but could see himself moving into one of these units. As a single dad with a steady job he says most new homes are out of his price range. "I'm working downtown at Raven, so it's a lot closer and it would be a good way to get into a home."

Thursday city and business leaders cut the ribbon on these units built at cost by members of the Sioux Empire Housing Partnership. They'll go on sale soon at around $120,000 apiece for the 2 bedroom units. It's the first affordable housing development in the area now known as Pettigrew Heights. Mike Cooper, the Director of the Sioux Falls Planning and Building Services Office say more affordable housing units will be coming. "Old neighborhoods have always been the real catalyst as far as availability of affordable housing."

For Nathan, it's one good option in a part of town the city wants to continue developing. "There's really not a lot of new housing in this area that you can feel comfortable about buying."

The exact prices of the homes haven't been set yet. Sioux Falls Mayor Dave Munson said the value of this property before the new homes were built was less than $200,000. Now, it will be much higher. About $600,000 have been invested in this property.

You have got to be kidding me! $120,000 or more affordable??? And it's only 2 bedrooms and they are all attached to each other with virtually no yard? Em ok. I don't think so. If I am paying $550 a month for a $74,000 mortgage at a great rate of 5.5% fixed, and I make $15 an hour and scraping by the skin of my teeth making sure all bills are paid and kids are fed.. how in the world can the average person afford $120k for a house?!?!

FYI there are plenty of 3 bedroom townhomes available in SF for around $120,000. And those are in highly desired neighborhoods in nice parts of Sioux Falls. Just in case anyone cares.
