Keeping The Hunt Despite Economic Woes

By Dawn Crawley

"This time of year, especially when we get a little rain like we have today, typically we would be packed all day and right now there are probably a dozen customers in the store but normally we would probably have 50 or 60 at this time," said Sodak Owner Scott McIntire.

Customers are showing up and spending money but not nearly as much as in the past.

"We are going to hunt regardless, that goes without saying, but it does make a guy a little bit smarter about what he buys, a little more in depth, maybe a little more research into what you are going to purchase," said Mike Burtsch.

When looking at expensive items like guns, there is precaution.

"I've got to be fairly economical. Guns, things like that, you want to make sure you get a multi use gun that you can use. Nobody goes out and buys a duck gun anymore, they buy a duck gun and a pheasant gun you know," said Mike.

Despite the hesitancy of customers, Scott McIntire remains optimistic.

"I'm not one to worry very much about it. We are going to be alright you know. It's just a matter of we will have a little less income this year," said Scott.

Local retailers have been running more ads and promotions in effort to combat the lack of consumer confidence.
