The Internal Revenue Service said time is running out for thousands of South Dakotans to file an income tax return in order to receive an economic stimulus payment.

The filing deadline is Wednesday for people who normally don't need to file a return or who received an extension to file. The stimulus checks, approved by Congress and President Bush last February, go to people who file a federal income tax return.

The IRS said more than 9,000 people in South Dakota hadn't filed
with a week to go before the deadline.

People who have no tax liability and who have no requirement to file a tax return because their income is too low or nontaxable can receive up to $300 individually.
