Yankton Discovery Bridge Opens

By KSFY Staff

History was made on the South Dakota/Nebraska border near Yankton Saturday as the new Discovery bridge opened to traffic.

Saturday's dedication included a ribbon cutting featuring the Governors from both states, several members of congress and a student from each state.

The $23 million structure replaces the 84-year-old Meridian bridge, which will now be a walking bridge.

Lisa List, a native of Nebraska, was there with her family as the first cars crossed the new bridge. She says she came out to witness history.

Lisa List says, "Some of us have, you know, grandparents and great grandparents that have told stories about crossing the river on ice and crossing the river when it was a toll bridge, so there's just a lot of history here."
