Woman Sues National Guard

By KSFY Staff

A retired colonel with the South Dakota National Guard is suing the Guard and several commanders.

Nancy Wetherill is suing the South Dakota National Guard, Army National Guard, and three high ranking officers, alleging discrimination based on her gender and Japanese-American race.

According to the complaint, Wetherill was eligible for retirement in 2007 but couldn't get full benefits until 2010.

She says the Guard approved her request to stay on staff until that later date, but Major General Steven Doohen of the South Dakota National Guard reversed the extension when he took over and assigned her to menial tasks until her forced retirement in July.

As a retired member of the armed services I can say I personally have seen that happen to others. I think the civilian population in general would be suprised to see how much power The Adjuant General has and will use it, unfortunately, not as it was intended.
