Doctor Shortage Worsens

By KSFY Staff

Young people unsure of a career in these uncertain times might want to consider medical school. The president of the South Dakota State Medical Association says the state has a doctor shortage and it's only expected to get worse.

South Dakota had 236 family physicians in 2006 and will need 67 more by 2020 to meet the ratio recommended by the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Eighteen of the state's 66 counties had no doctors living there as of early this year.

The medical association has given Governor Rounds a proposal that would add 15 spots at the Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota. The move would result in more doctors.
