Delta Recalls 1.6 Million Cribs

By Brian Allen

In May of 2007--an eight-month-old baby girl died in her crib after the safety pegs were not installed.

One year later, an eight-month-old baby boy suffocated after a spring-loaded safety peg failed and allowed the side of his crib to detach. It took a second death before the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission got involved and the agency has now announced a recall.

"There's actually two different recalls being announced one because...and the other because hardware can fail--the hazard is the same," said Julie Vallese, CPSC.

The cribs being recalled total around 1.6 million in total. Most are older models made by Delta. These cribs have one side that can drop down.

Nearly a million of the cribs were sold from January 1995 through Sept of last year, at Walmart, Kmart and Target. Another 600,000 were also sold at major retailers from 2000 through 2007.

"The problem is that these small pegs can be broken or missing. If that is the case then the drop side can fail," said Vallese.

The CPSC and Delta urge those with the defective cribs to immediately stop using them and contact Delta to receive a free repair kit.

The recalled cribs were made in China. But Even if you do not have this particular crib, the consumer group suggests inspecting your child's crib to make sure there are no safety hazards.

Delta Enterprises is offering replacement parts to anyone with one of these cribs, the recall does not affect cribs from Delta currently on the market.
