New Legislation Proposed to Ban Smoking in Bars and Casinos

By Associated Press

The South Dakota Tobacco-Free Kids Network will launch another campaign in the Legislature to ban smoking in bars and casinos.

Existing state law prohibits smoking in places of employment and indoor public areas, but it make exceptions for motel rooms and businesses where alcohol is served.

Legislation to remove the exceptions has failed in the past.

Ok this a great idea. There are many states where this passed and I have been to 1 that was MN! It was AWESOME we could pick anywhere to go eat and didn't have to worry about where we sat and how far we sat from the smoking area cause there WAS NO SMOKING in the whole place!!!! It was GREAT!!! My husband and I are highly ellirgic to smoke and so this was GREAT!! I was hoping this issue would come up and we would soon vote on it or legislature would just pass it! This would be GREAT for SD!!

Quite the joker..."only thing you have right." Closed-minds in action here. Mufflers vs smokers. Sit in an enclosed room with exhaust floating around you'd be in the morgue the same day. That joker makes me laugh. Mufflers Are more toxic, they destroy the ozone. What's more to say on the subject of mufflers vs smokers? SIt in an enclsoed room with smokers, the morgue wont be waiting at theend of the day. Real challenge? Protect the future generations

The Muffler argument is a very real and affects the entire planet, unlike smokers and second- hand smoke. Think about it, without the ozone layer, who can survive? Let's prioritize here, we have to protect the ozone first and foremost. Using a little common sense, a person in an enclosed room inhaling second- hand smoke can live years. A person in an enclosed room inhaling exhaust from mufflers has maybe a few hours to live. Which is worse?

Dear Cerabi, you don't have the right to attack anyone's common sense if you don't think smoking kills. 1100 South Dakotans a year from their own smoking and up to 180 more (kids included) from secondhand smoke. Are smokers the only one with rights to patronize any restaurant or bar? NO. These establishments follow OSHA rules, food safety rules, building codes and more to ensure a SAFE environment for workers and customers. Everyone should be able to breathe clean air as well.

To Clean Air: If you don't like the smoke, then don't go to restaurants that allow it!!!! No one can prevent kids from starting to smoke. If they choose to, then they do. Also, if you don't like the smoke in the air then DON'T go to a bar!!! It's common sense, which you obviously DON'T HAVE!!! What about all the alchohol related accidents that kill people, you don't hear about smoking related accidents. Come on, get a life. I agree with OK Get Real. STOP WASITING MONEY ON STUPID THINGS!!!

No, you get real. Automobiles are polutants but that is about the only thing you have right. The next time I'm sitting in a Bar with a car parked next to me with it's exhaust in my face, I'll support your "legislation". It's absolutely absurd that I can't get a drink somewhere without choking on poison. Let me guess, then I shouldn't go to the bar, right? Selfish! Stupid! Pathetic!

Let's be realistic and stop wasting money. Everytime we walk down the street we are subject to toxins from mufflers...worse than tobacco toxins. Should we ban driving in cities? Better yet, submit legislation to bring back the horse. You people make me sick...you have to have a law to straighten every curly hair that irritates you. It's pitiful.

This effort is for ALL South Dakotans. I like the name of the group - they want to keep kids from ever starting to smoke. They want today's kids to grow up into healthy employees tomorrow. They want today's kids to have parents there for them as they grow up and not lose them to smoking-related illnesses. All South Dakotans have the right to breathe clean air, including those who work in bars and restaurants and those who choose to go to bars and restaurants.

I am going to launch legislation to keep kids out of bars and casinos. That way this group can stop wasting money!

PLEASE PASS THIS THIS TIME! Why do I have to smell like crap because I want to go out to a bar every once in a while? The term "Smokers Rights" is absolutely CRAZY! Since when is your bad habit my problem? You have no rights when your actions cause me physical harm! Smokers are selfish and are in denial that they are a problem to the rest of us! Thank goodness for bars like STUBBIES that value a healthy work environment for their customers and employees!
