On Tuesday, Iowa's Supreme Court will begin hearing arguments to challenge the state's ban on same sex marriage.

Like many people, Karen Mudd of Sioux Falls will be closely watching the case before the Iowa Supreme Court. But for her, there could be personal implications. She's been with her partner for ten years, but can't marry because South Dakota doesn't recognize same-sex marriage.

"What's happening in Iowa gives us hope that same-sex couples like us might someday have the legal protections and the security and the dignity that goes with marriage," said Mudd.

It's exciting for Mudd that Iowa might become the first midwest state to legalize gay marriage. Massachusetts became the first state to do so and in November, Connecticut also approved gay marriage.

The debate on same sex marriage has continued across the country. In California, the Supreme Court approved putting proposition eight on the ballot, which when later approved by voters, overturned gay marriage.

As Iowa's Supreme Court prepares to hear arguments this week, Mudd hopes Iowa will soon make history. She said, "When we see our neighbors taking a stand for fairness, it gives us inspiration that we may move towards more fair minded policies here in South Dakota."

I want to know why same-sex couples continue to try to appropriate unto themselves the time-honored, sacred institution of holy matrimony. I have no objection to extending many of the rights of married couples to same-sex couples, but PLEASE, why do they have such a life-and-death NEED to be able to call it marriage?!

I do not believe in any sort of 'God' out there, but I can't help shake the feeling that people, men or women, are making a lifestyle decision in claiming to be gay, or lesbian. I believe they are deciding to live their life in a perverse way, and I for one do not want my children exposed to their deviant lifestyle decision(s).

So does KSFY only post comments that agree with their political point? I know of several comments that have been posted by my co workers and I that have been ignored. Typical KSFY; that's why you're No. 3 in my book.

Listen: not everyone is the same religion as you are. Throwing the bible out as the sole reason behind your view makes you look like a fool. I agree with you to be honest; I believe that homosexuals and lesbians make the choice to live their lifestyles the way they do. I made this decision based on my life experiences, not on some book that tells you it's ok to stone your wife if she's unfaithfull or sell your daughter if you already have one.

Ted, not a personal attack, but the Bible has withstood over 2000 years of attacks and it still is the number one seller of all time. Now tell me people, does this not kind of prove a point that many people are against gay marriage? One more thing, please tell me why using the Bible as a sole reason behind a view makes anyone look like a fool. It's the most tried and tested book in the history of the world. To me using that as a source is a very smart and logical decision

To Ted 1st of all what you said is very liberal. You have your own view on things fine but I know I am a christian and that I do believe in god and what the bible says is right and that is it. There is no way aroud that it is just the way it is so yes the people whom are homosexuals and lesbians are sinners because what the bible says.

I would understand if you said the bible should be used as a reference for determining right from wrong based on 'faith'; but by saying it should be used as the standard based on popularity is insane. What you are saying is there is no right, or no wrong, just public opinion. I guess faith alone isn't as strong as it used to be.

The first sentence of my comment should answer your question: Using any religious text as a universal right or wrong is folly because not everyone has the same belief structure as you do. Are you going to tell a Hindu what is morally right or wrong based on the bible? Or should a Muslim tell you your wife shouldn't wear makeup because of what the Koran says? Think about it.

We MUST understand however that we do love these people as a whole. We are to Hate the sin and LOVE the sinner. It states in the Bible that Jesus spent most of His time with the sinners. Loving them for who they are. So yes we love them its just the sin that they are doing is what we Hate.

JPM, Smart and logical are two words that shouldn't be used in conjunction with religion. You use your belief in the bible as justification for discriminatory laws, but you are ignoring the wall between church and state. You can deny the wall exists all you want, but it has been reaffirmed time and again. As far as majority rule; the majority cannot impose its will at the detriment of minority rights. Maybe people should read more of the constitution and less of the bible when discussing law.
