Shoppers Risk Travel

By Melissa Stee

Snow packed roads and blowing snow made driving difficult in Sioux Falls Saturday, but the holiday season prompted many to risk taking those roads.

It's Christmas shopping that brought Ben Young all the way from Mission, South Dakota to Sioux Falls during this winter blizzard.

Ben Young says, "It was the last weekend we had a chance to get away before Christmas actually hit. We just stayed a little later than we were supposed to."

With the way the roads in Sioux Falls looked on Saturday, Ben says he's wondering if the more than three hour trip home might have difficult driving in store.

Ben Young says, "It's scary. I'm kind of worried about it actually. She has some family in Mitchell. If it gets too bad we'll probably stay there tonight and get up in the morning and drive the rest of the way."

State Highway Patrol Trooper Lori Olney says that might be a good idea. The blowing snow across the Interstates has left many drivers in the ditch. She says she was surprised to see how many people were traveling these roads, but she says if you are going to be one of them, have a survival kit with you.

Ben says his car is filled to the top with Christmas presents, but that's one thing they did find room for.

Ben Young says, "We got our cell phones and we're gased up and we got jackets and stuff like that. So we're pretty prepared."

The Highway Patrol says they'll continue their no travel advisory into Sunday.
