Vote Set For Plan To Dissolve Carthage School District (AP)

By Associated Press

An election has been set for Jan. 27 to find out if voters will approve a plan to dissolve the Carthage School District.

The state Department of Education has approved the plan, but it can't take effect unless it's ratified by the district's voters.

The proposal divides the 150-square-mile Carthage district among the Sanborn Central, Iroquois, De Smet and Howard school districts.

Sixty-three percent of the district is in Miner County, and that is to become part of the Howard district. Sanborn Central would get the 11 percent that's in Sanborn County, and the remaining 26 percent would be divided equally between De Smet and Iroquois.

At last report, Carthage had 12 students. It was required to reorganize or dissolve because of a 2007 state law.
