Celebrating Dr. King's Day In Sioux Falls

By Valerie Gutierrez

It really is fitting that on this historic week, Sioux Falls will unveil its first African American museum but its not the past that some city leaders are at focusing on--it's the future of Dr. Kings legacy.

"Martin Luther King had the torch that he carried in the midst of darkness but he's passing it on symbolicly to Barack Obama," said Pastor Wayne Williams joined community leaders from around the city at a prayer breakfast to kick off the celebration of Dr.King Day in Sioux Falls.

"We talked about unity and bringing people together. Ithink that's what its all about in this time especially with the conditions that we're facing, " said Sioux Falls Mayor Dave Munson who echoed the feelings of the diverse crowd of about 70 who came together at the breakfast.

Pastor Williams agreed: "We're all in this ship together and if we don't come together then this ship is going to go down."

As we move forward at making Dr.Kings dream come true by the swearing in of the first African American president, the dream of some South Dakota African-Americans is also coming true with the unveiling of the first African American museum in Sioux Falls.

"I think its been at least 20 years that we've been working on the African American experience and trying to preserve the history so for it to be on display is just absolutely wonderful," said scholar Joyce Jefferson, proving this weeks events are paying honor to the past but signal a more unified future.
