Farm Rescue arrives in Eureka to help family who lost everything to a tornado.

By Dawn Crawley

This is no ordinary spring planting for the Metzger family. Eight months ago a tornado destroyed their home and farm. Although they moved into a new house a few weeks ago, they had no idea how they were going to plant crops this year. "Since the tornado, we had a bunch of people help clean up the area," said Jessica Metzger. "We haven't seen much of Justin. He's been out. There's been volunteers coming and going."

Thursday, Farm Rescue came to Eureka to assist the Metzgers with their crops. Farm Rescue is a non-profit organization that helps family farmers in crisis and is made up entirely of volunteers. "I've seen throughout the years there are fewer family farms and that family size is smaller with less children and it is harder for neighbors to help one another when a crisis strikes. So I thought there should be a formal organization to fill in the gap where neighbors normally help," said Farm Rescue President Bill Gross.

Around fifty volunteers will work 24 hours a day until planting is complete. The Metzger family appreciates all the help and support.
"Someday, I hope to be one of these volunteers for Farm Rescue, to help somebody out when they need help, like I did now," said Justin Metzger.

The Metzgers are the first family in South Dakota receiving help from farm rescue and they say they will never forget it.

Farm Rescue's first year of operation was 2006. They planted crops for ten families free of charge.
