Drug investigators busted a Sioux Falls home Tuesday, but the biggest threat facing them wasn't from the 5 people inside. Instead, the danger came from an angry dog. And this was no average pooch. The full-grown Pit Bull charged after one of the deputies and was so aggressive the officer felt he had no choice but to shoot. The dog was hit in the head, and amazingly survived.
KSFY talked to a neighbor who saw the whole thing happen.
When neighbor Gerald Simkins heard gunfire next door, he wasn't sure what to think. When he came out and saw a drug raid in progress next door, he focused on the neighbors full grown pit bull looking dazed and wandering in circles.
"You could see blood on his face, running down his face. And it was like, I thought he was going to die the way he was stumbling around there."
The dog was shot in the head, treated by a vet and released back to it's owner later in the evening.
Assistant Minnehaha County Sheriff Michelle Boyd say the deputy had no other choice. "He was forced to shoot the Pit Bull in the head because it was within inches of his leg."
Gerald says he's had some run-ins with the neighbors in the past. But he never likes to see an animal hurt and was glad to hear the dog survived. Investigators say they raided the house because they had information marijuana was being distributed there. Four adults and 1 juvenile were charged with misdemeanors. Detectives say they'll keep an eye on the house.
Detectives say they think drugs had been sold or moved from the house before the raid.
