Avera Medical Minute: Endometrial Ablation

By Valerie Gutierrez

Painful periods made Michelle Thranum feel miserable.

"It wears you down for one to where you're just beyond exhaustion and you get tired of living that way," she said.

She opted to have Novasure Endometrial Ablation.

"You think you have to put up with it because everyone else is going through it or that its something you have to deal with until its over," she said. "It's something now that you do not have to deal with. I would tell every woman on the planet: if you're having problems this is the solution. It's incredible."

The 90-second procedure uses a radio frequency to melt the lining of the uterus and is less invasive than a hysterectomy. Dr. Jodi Scott who treated Michele said this procedure puts an end to problem periods.

"It can bring their menstrual flow to a much more normal acceptance level. Forty percent of people will quit having periods all together so that's very nice for them as well," Dr. Scott said.

Most women experience no pain after the procedure, and can return to work and regular activities the next day.
