Avera Medical Minute: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

By Valerie Gutierrez

A syndrome that causes infertility and a hormonal imbalance in women is often undiagnosed. The condition occurs when women have too many male hormones--causing cysts to grow on the ovaries.

Thousands of women suffer from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. A simple blood test can detect whether or not you have it. Dr. Jane Gaetze of Avera McKennan Women's Specialty clinic says symptoms include irregular periods, weight gain, excess facial hair, acne, and difficulty conceiving. She urges women not to to ignore the symptoms or put up with them.

"You can actually prevent diabetes, hypertension, infertility, especially if it’s caught early," she said. "It would behoove anyone who has these abnormalities to at least look into it."

Treatment options include medication and lifestyle changes for example a modified diet and regular exercise. The root cause of the syndrome is insulin resistance. The body will then compensate by pumping out more insulin to maintain a normal blood sugar.
