Men's Health Screening at Scheels

By Nancy Naeve Brown

Your gun is clean, your tags are current, you are revved for the hunt, but is your heart ready?   If men won't go to the doctor before the hunt, the doctor is going to them.

Since so many guys are gearing up for the various hunting seasons soon to open this fall doctors and nurses at McGreevy Clinic Avera thought why not get to them in their element by offering a FREE Men's Health Screening at the Sioux Falls Scheels Store Saturday October 10th from 9:00 to Noon. They'll check your blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI and non-fasting blood sugar (test for diabetes). Kurt Lyman took advantage of the screening last year saying it's better to be safe than sorry.

Lyman says, "There's no question about it. If a person doesn't know they have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or even that their blood sugars off, it would be lifesaving to know those numbers."

The ultimate goal for hunters is to mount their big trophy on their wall. But before you can do that you'll have to drag the 10 point buck out of the field and that can put a lot of stress on your heart. That's where screening becomes so crucial.

Dr. Kim Pederson is a family medicine physician at the McGreevy Clinic Avera West and is one of the doctors who will be at the screening on Saturday. He says, "There's always a risk when you trudge through the mud and muck if you haven't been physically active and all of a sudden they find themselves active. That puts the heart and respiratory system at great risk. It's a good idea to know where your blood pressure is at and cholesterol to know if you have a greater risk of having a problem. Of course, if we find something then they should go to their doctor before they head out to hunt."

Remember guys, no amount of camouflage can hide you from heart disease, diabetes or stroke. Get your health into the hunt.

The first 100 to get screened get a $15 gift card to Scheels. Everyone will have their name thrown in a hat to win a Lowrance i-Finder hand-held GPS valued at $350.
