One brand of kids gummy vitamins.

Do you have trouble getting your children to eat their fruits and vegetables?Maybe you've turned to supplements.Something fairly new on the market are these kids gummy bear vitamins.

Although they may be easy to get your kids to chomp down, one article recently published in USA Today says they are also hard on the chompers.

We did some checking locally to see if that's true.It really comes as no surprise that most kids would rather eat the fruity tasting gummy vitamins than fruit itself, but are gummy style vitamins cavities in the making or a genius invention to get nutrients into little bodies?

Shelly Haan is a mother of three and all of her kids take vitamins but not this form. She says, " I would not use them they're whole concept of gummy anything.. gummy to me means it sticks in your teeth, it stays and rots and decays not matter how hard you brush.

Sioux Falls Dentist Dr. Mark Berdahl says he hasn't seen any evidence in his office that the gummy vitamins cause more tooth decay, but he says they have the potential. The Doctor says, "Any food that sticks in the teeth and has sugar in it tends to be more of a challenge because it leaves that sugar available for bacteria in the teeth to use and creates acid that destroys the teeth."

Dr. Berdahl says both potato chips and regular cans of soda have way more sugar than the gummy vitamins do and can do more damage. He says, "the chips are full of starch which is sugar. It sticks in the grooves of your teeth and doesn't come out easily and makes it available for bacteria to form over long periods of time."

Dr. Berdahl says the getting essential minerals and vitamins from their natural state is still better, but if you have to give your child a supplement, in any form, is still better than nothing. He says, "I would rather see them get those vitamins and clean their teeth afterward."

The good doctor says children should always brush their teeth before bed because you don't want any of those sugary foods sitting in a dry mouth for 8 hours. He says that is asking for trouble and eventually a filling. If you want to use the gummy vitamins, you may want to serve them with breakfast.
