Aberdeen School Officials Try To Prevent The Flu

Health officials are reminding South Dakotans to get a flu shot.

By Dawn Crawley

A student at Holgate Middle School headed home for the day Thursday after her temperature hit 101 degrees.

"This year there have been a high report of some illnesses at the school in the months of January and February. We'll even probably have some more into the month of March," said Holgate Middle School Asst. Princ. Andrea Prehn.

Some sick children are showing up at the school office, but students are not the only ones affected.

"We do see it in the staff as well and so sometimes for schools that can be a challenge because you are trying to look for more qualified substitutes to come in and help out," said Prehn.

Over at the Brown County Health Center the number of people showing up for flu shots are up.

"We have inoculated approximately 3,200 people this year and it is up from last year. We have seen a large increase in the number of children that have been vaccinated this year," said Department of Health Manager Merri Nelson.

Preventative measures are being taken at Holgate Middle School. Plenty of hand sanitizer and extra attention is being paid to disinfect surfaces students come in contact with, but the Assistant Principal says it could be worse.

"Thankfully we have not had to shut down our day to day routine due to high numbers of Influenza A or B or the flu virus, but it's something that we always want to make sure we are prepared for," said Prehn.

Officials at the Health Department say they are seeing people show up for a second flu shot, but if you have already had one shot this year the Centers for Disease Control does not recommend that you get another one.
