Committee Endorses Sonogram Bill

By Associated Press

A South Dakota House committee has endorsed a bill that would require abortion doctors to ask women if they would like to see sonograms of their fetuses.  The Health Committee voted 7-5 to send the bill to the full House for further debate. A similar bill has already been passed by the House and is under consideration by the Senate.

The bill's supporters say a woman should be offered a chance to see a sonogram before having an abortion because it might change her mind.  Opponents say the measure is not necessary and would amount to harassment. They say it also could prompt an expensive lawsuit.
