MRSA Case At USF

By Robert Wilson

KSFY has learned The University of Sioux Falls is dealing with what they believe to be a case of MRSA on campus.

The Vice President for Academic Affairs says an athletic trainer with Sanford Health, who contracts with the university, says that a student has contracted the bacteria.

As a result, the school closed several facilities including the athletic department weight room and football locker room so it could be disinfected.

School officials tell us other tests and precautions are also being taken, and they are continuing to consult with health experts.

My father contracted MRSA after being intubated during a hospital stay 5 years ago. Now whenever he is hospitalized the staff has to gown, glove and mask when they work with him as it is in his lungs. I live with him but I do not feel endangered and I don't take any precautions. They do blood tests occasionally to see if it is active. The last time it was they tried a medication to control it. The cost was close to $3000 but Medicare covered most of it. As far as we know he still has it.

It would be great if the story explained what is MRSA.
