USF Deals With MRSA Case

Since first learning about the case of MRSA found in a football player, officials at the University of Sioux Falls have done all they could to learn more about the infection.

Since first learning about the case of MRSA, officials at the University of Sioux Falls have done all they could to learn more about the infection and what they need to do now to follow up.

After first learning about the infection, the weight room and workout room the USF football team uses were closed and disinfected.

After talking to an infectious disease specialist Friday, school officials say that probably wasn't necessary.

The most important advice they received, make sure everyone practice good hygiene.

"I think it is kind of a breath of relief today because you don't know. We didn't want to panic, but we didn't wanted to be cautious to because we wanted to protect our community here at the University as much as we could," said V.P., Dean of Academic Affairs Brett Bradfield.

Now school leaders also know how to spot other possible cases.

"We also talked about symptoms and the kinds of things we should be looking for in case any of our population is affected," said Bradfield.

As for preventing future cases school leaders tell me the best thing that students and other university personnel can do is just wash their hands frequently.

About 30 to 40 percent of us carry the staph on our hands and never have a problem.

Your lead story last night talked and talked about MRSA but never told us WHAT it was until the second story, and even that was a weak description. Why not come right out and call it a "dangerous staph infection" instead of going on and on about how the school is handling it with sprays and keeping the kid out of class and the gym. It was very frustrating to watch.
