South Dakota Reports First West Nile Case

The South Dakota Department of Health says the state's first West Nile Virus detection this season has been reported. 

According to a news release, a Corson County resident in the 30 to 39 age group has the virus.  In 2007, the first human case was reported on June 5th and a total of 208 cases and 6 deaths were reported for the year.  South Dakota's first case of human West Nile Virus was reported in 2002.  Since then, 1,677 cases and 26 deaths have been reported in the state. 

The Department of Health recommends the following precautions to prevent mosquito bites and reduce the risk of WNV:

Use mosquito repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535;  Wear shoes, socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt to limit mosquito exposure;  Limit time outdoors from dusk to midnight;   Eliminate standing water that gives mosquitoes a place to breed, and support local mosquito control efforts.

This is scary. being a mom of two I hope to never have a sick child w/ west nile. Although, I think they need to spray more. Because in my area their are tons of misquetos and it is terrible.
