There are ten reported cases of AIDS in Brown County and over 500 in South Dakota. 

"The most important thing is being able to contact them and let them know the results," said Molly Petersen.

Petersen talked with Mayor Mike Levsen Friday about the Kick me Campaign's National HIV Testing Day.

As part of the campaign, the Mayor agreed to take a test.

"The reason that I did this wasn't that I felt I needed the test. To demonstrate to people it doesn't really involve very much and you can get great information right away," said Mayor Levsen.

Which is important because officials have noticed a trend based on fear.

"We have a high rate of people not coming back for the results, so it's something we really try to work on," said Petersen.

The Volunteers of America are hoping testing today helps raise awareness about the AIDS virus.

Officer Keith Therouex is also taking a test as part of the campaign.

"We are supposed to wear protective gear, but that doesn't stop for things getting splattered or because we get into physical contact or situations. So it's probably a good idea that we get tested on a regular basis just to make sure we don't get exposed to this."

And Molly agrees.

"It's just like living in a small town, you don't think you have to lock your doors. Uu don't think bad things happen and they do."
