Organic food may be more expensive but there are ways you can cut costs.

By Brian Allen

Organic foods have their advantages, but some consumers say they're too expensive.

We take a look at some ways you can include organic foods in your diet...and not bust your budget.

Organic food offers many healthy benefits.

"It's grown without any chemical pesticides or fertilizers." But when it comes to cost, registered dietitian Cynthia Sass maintains organic food may be too expensive for some shoppers. "The only cons of organic in my mind are the cost barriers. Organic foods can be 50 percent more depending on what the food is."

Experts say it costs more to produce organic food in part because regulations are tighter and harvests are often smaller. Sass has some tips on fitting organic food into your diet despite the premium prices. "Nearly every supermarket chain nowadays has an organic line of foods or within their store brand they carry organics. Also, join a Price Club, Costco, BJs, Sam's Club, all of those have organic foods. Buying in bulk is another great idea. You can buy nearly every kind of grain in bulk. Organic brown rice is only about 99 cents a pound."

A real savings if you're on a low cost budget.

Farmers' Markets are another great sources of fresh local produce. They tend to be cheaper and fresher.

If you don't see a sign saying the produce is organic, be sure to ask.... some farmers may be making the transition to organic farming.
