Daryl Thorson was diagnosed with ALS 3 years ago. It is a fatal progressive neuro-degenerative disease that attacks nerve cells resulting in muscle weakening. For some reason, studies have shown military veterans are twice as likely to develop ALS. Now all veterans with ALSO will be granted full access to health and disability benefits regardless or where or when they served.

"I had applied for VA benefits in 2000, but they rejected my application. They said they weren't taking anymore patients. This will give me a chance to be served by the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls," said Daryl.

Daryl was drafted in the army in 1958 and did his tour of duty stateside in the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, Washington until 1960.

"At first they were just talking about Gulf War vets now expanded, even though it didn't matter where we served. It's a bigger percentage of veterans than the general population that get ALS," said Daryl.

Daryl can still use his walker to get around his house. When he goes outside his house he needs his power wheelchair and as his disease progresses he will need more equipment and that's where the VA benefits will come in handy.

"As I understand it, it would provide for the payment of medication drugs. Some of the medication available for ALS is very expensive," said Daryl.

The ALS Association calls the new VA policy a historic victory for veterans. At least it's one less hurdle for Daryl and his family to face.

"Gotta keep working, and making progress," says Daryl.

Daryl wasn't sure of all the specifics that will be covered, he said he will be getting a list in the mail, but he thinks his wife will also be covered through this policy after he dies.
