Aaron Maguire puts Storm player Cory Johnsen in the Bod Pod.

For those of you who resolved to lose weight and improve your life with better, healthier eating and exercise.. there is a new tool in Sioux Falls to help you find out if you are on the right track. It's called the Bod Pod and it can tell you what the scale can't.

For those of you old enough to remember, the Bod Pod kind of resembles the egg shaped space ship Mork from Ork arrived in on the late 70's sitcom "Mork and Mindy", but it's actually a piece of high tech medical equipment that tests your body composition.

KSFY's Financial Expert Aaron Maguire recently opened Dakota Body Testing in a suite near Nutty's South. He owns exclusive rights to the only Bod Pod in Sioux Falls.

Aaron says, "The old school way is looking at a scale to see how much do you weigh. The new school is actually finding out what your body composition is all about. The scare is important but if you're on a diet you want to know you're not losing muscle mass."

25 year old Cory Johnsen is a nose tackle for the Sioux Falls Storm. He came in for testing because part of his job as an athlete is keeping his body in shape. He hired a nutritionist 2 months ago to help him trim down.

Aaron says, "Traditionally with a lot of diets you tend to lose muscle mass and that's not good. When you starve your body, your body stores more fat and that's also not good. It could tell you, you are burning 3000 calories a day. If you take in 500 calories less a day, you'll lose a pound of fat."

Cory says, " I want to be in the moderately lean category. I'm not sure where I'm at, but that's where I want to be. That's why it's good to get tested to get a baseline."

Aaron puts Cory's height and weight in the computer and the Bod Pod does the rest. It calculates your body fat and can tell how many calories you burn in a day (your resting metabolic rate).

The Bod Pod measures your body composition by air displacement. It has a number, it knows how much air it has in it to begin with so when you get in you'll hear a couple of pops and 50 seconds later it will know how much air you've displaced.

Cory's stats didn't come back exactly as he was hoping for. The 6 foot 319 pounder came back with 28% body fat which puts him in the excess fat range.

Cory says, "Yes, I was surprised. I didn't think it would be that high. It just means I have to put some more work in."

But at least now he knows what's going on inside his bod, thanks to the Bod Pod.

The cost for one test is $49 with discounted prices for packages. For more information check out the website

this is a joke. who cares if you have a certain percent body fat... this tool is only useful for xtreme athletes. An average person does not need to know "percent body fat" they need to know how they fit into their clothes, blood tests for health, and keeping exercise as a routine. % body fat means nothing to the general public.
