Making Good Snack Choices At The Movie Theater

By KSFY Staff

Going to the movies can be great fun, but if you get caught up at the concession stand, a night out can become an evening of poor eating. We have some simple things you can do in order to be a healthy movie-goer.

The Oscar nominations are out and you have a lot of movies to see in the next couple of weeks. What's a good flick without some snacks to go with it? Most film fare has a lot of calories and fat and comes in large sizes. That's because concessions represent some 40% of theaters' profits.  What to do?  The American Dietetic Association says pick wisely.   If you like popcorn, watch the butter.  A large tub of buttered popcorn can contain as much as 1,500 calories. Nix the butter and it can drop by over 800 calories. And go easy with the salt shaker.

Love candy?  Limit the chocolate.  A big movie box of chocolate candy can pack as high as a 900-calorie punch.  Share a box of gummy or hard candy.  Although they have sugar, they don't contain as much fat.  And drink light. A 32-oz soda has up to 450 calories. Pick water, or diet sodas.

Nutritionists also suggest you pack your own healthy snacks, like carrot sticks or pretzels to munch on or eat before you go to the theater. That way you can bypass the goodies when walking to your seat.
