National Eating Disorders Awareness Week

The aim of this week is to prevent eating disorders and body image issues. However, that's much easier said than done.

Anorexia, bulimia and binge eating; the three classes of eating disorders. They affect more than ten million Americans, but how do we know when eating becomes problematic? "Its starting to run their world and everything becomes (about) what am I eating," says Mary Dressing, a mental health counselor with Sanford Women's Health.

There are numerous causes for eating disorders, one of which can be vulnerability, especially in teens. "They're questioning their direction in life and they're very concerned about body image and the pressure to look a certain way," Dressing explains.

Dressing says understanding the illness is key. You must also know that recovery is not easy; "you can't say 'just eat,' or 'dont go to the gym,' that's not going to get you anywhere."

As national eating disorder awareness week winds down, there are some key things to remember. "Prevention is critical. Awareness of the public...recognizing that this is an illness, but certainly treatable. Its not a choice. (They're) not choosing to be anorexic."

Eating disorders are traditionally associated with women, but more and more men are struggling. Of the 11 million suffering from eating disorders, it is estimated that about one million of those are men.

There are a bunch of tips and pointers for spotting eating disorders, as well as treatment options.  For more information, visit the official website of the National Eating Disorders Association.

I have joined the fight against obesity, starting with myself and my family. It definitely takes a shift in mindset and a change in lifestyle. I have also started support groups for women struggling with food to especially aid mothers in keeping their families healthy. I now took it one step further online, so if you are serious about changing things in your life, then please go have a look at my website: www.EatingsDisorders.com
