We are starting a new franchise you'll also see exclusively on KSFY Live at 10:00 Monday nights. It's called What's Going Around. We are tapping in to the Avera Network to find out what bug is taking root where. We start in Sioux Falls.

If your home or workplace is anything like ours, then you've probably been hit with an upper respiratory infection. According to Dr. Mark Rodig at McGreevy Clinic Avera Southeast, it's not discriminatory in age either. It comes with sinus congestion, fever, cough, sore throat, and sticks around for weeks.

McGreevy Southeast has also seen a fair share of high school students with infectious mononucleosis or mono. It's a a virus typically transmitted through saliva, sharing drinks or utensils. The signs are fever, tender swollen lymph nodes, sore throat (with white patches on the tonsils) and fatigue.

Dr. Rodig has also treated a lot of rotavirus cases. The most common cause of severe diarrhea in young children and often responsible for outbreaks of diarrhea in daycares.

And it's not pretty to look at, but the McGreevy Clinic has also seen some patients with shingles. It's an outbreak of rash or blisters on the skin that is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. The first sign of shingles is often burning or tingling pain in one spot on the body.. on one side of the body. Shingles comes from the virus hiding inside the person's body not from an outside source. Shingles is the only one of those that's not contagious unless there is skin to skin contact. And if you catch it early, Dr. Rodig says there is medication you can take to stave off the painful after effects.

The rest of what's going around, no such luck. It's all contagious and there's no meds for it. Dr. Rodig recommends plenty of rest and liquids.
