Sex Assaults High Among Native Americans

By Robert Wilson

A new report produced by Amnesty International draws some alarming conclusions about the rates of sexual violence against women on the nation's Native American and Native Alaskan Reservations. The findings of the report were presented at a community meeting at the Brookings Library Thursday night.

For Tinnekkia Williams-Three Legs the issue is personal. She told this group her story of being raped and the pain and hard work of healing after the attack, but it was sitting with a group of 8 to 10 women who experienced similar trauma that she began to realize how widespread the problem is. All of them had been the victim of some kind of violence.

Amnesty International explained the core of the problem they've found on the nation's Native American and Native Alaskan Reservations. They include jurisdictional issues that make it harder to prosecute offenders, a lack of funding for law enforcement, and a lack of support for health care facilities on reservations all contribute to the higher rates of violence.

Amnesty International looked specifically at the Standing Rock Reservation, plus Oklahoma and Alaska.

The group says the solution is clear. Congress needs to provide more funding to the Violence Against Women Act and the Bureau of Indian Affairs for law enforcement.

One example of how thinly stretched BIA law enforcement is, is on the Standing Rock Reservation where the have 5 officers to cover 2.3 million acres.
